Unleashing the Power of Human Mind: A Journey Through Thought Experiments
Gedankenexperiment, (German for: “thought experiment”) .
Basically devices of the imaginations. It is such an interesting way to
approach a situation. Rather than thinking and giving a solution conducting
experiments, it engages our imaginations in giving possible solutions. Some
thought experiments fulfil particular work within a theory. Others are executed
because it is impossible to run the experimental scenario in the real world.
It's among One of the many things that I find quite fascinating. There been
times when I spent hours and hours sitting on a chair and running through an
hypothetical situation in my mind, and what could be its possible solution. It
is a step out of my comfort zone. Putting myself in a situation where I cannot
answer with ease, surely helps me realize my limits and helps me grow.
There's no doubt about it's contribution to our modern
world. Einstein's most famous Thought Experiment, Einstein thought back on how,
at his juvenile years, he visualized chasing after a beam of light and that the
thought experiment had emulated in his development of special relativity. Also,
how gravity is the curvature of Space-time. All of which was the product of pure
imagination.
They do allow us to tap into a great store of “instinctive
knowledge” picked up from past experience.
One day I was watching one of the episodes of NOVA . It was
a documentary on black hole. That's when I learnt the term "Thought
experiments”. And, How Karl Schwarzschild mathematically proved the existence
of black hole and he devised a solution for general relativity. Since then I
have been hooked up to it. I tried searching books after books , but our local
shops don't really stock them. Then I came across few Science YouTube channels.
Among which, my favorite is "What if?".
It is an extensively unique platform, who strive for epic
exploration of countless possibilities. Some of their thought experiments are
like, "What if we had a working
Wrap Drive Technology?" "What
if we could harness the energy of a Black Hole?" "What if we sent our trash into sun?"
"What if we brought Europa's ocean
water to Earth?"
These are some excellent food for thoughts. This basically
helped me develop my imaginative faculty and also develop my problem-solving
skills just by visualizing. Specially in math and physics.
This conceptual believe always run in my mind. It makes me
more thoughtful, which uplift me to discover the unknown. Enthralling me in
such a way that, I feel myself competent to solve .
Now I can express myself as a convergent thinker, as I
always engage myself in assembling information in-order to finding a solution
or coming to a nearer point. Thus keeping myself lost in the art of thought.
